Monumental Church, a National Historic Landmark, served as an Episcopal Church from1814until its deconsecration in1965. Also known as the Virginia Federal Convention, the Virginia Ratifying Convention was an open-to-the-public debate held in the Richmond Academy, which then stood on the site. To many southerners, slave unrest seemed to arise from sources other than enslaved people themselves. Four years later in 1611, the governor of the new Jamestown colony organized an expedition to sail up the James and settled below the falls in a place they called Henricus. Three months later when Arnolds men, now part of British forces led by General William Phillips, approached Richmond for a second time, the British were stopped by the sight of local militiamen and American Continental troops led by a young Frenchman, the Marquis de Lafayette. Men, women, children, Black, white, free and enslaved were there. During the brief British occupation of Richmond, many Henrico court records were destroyed. It is believed that between 1800 and 1865, an estimated 300,000 to 350,000 slaves were processed through the Shockoe Bottom slave auction blocks in Richmond, on their way to the Deep South. Pharoah and Tom, the two men who revealed the plot, were rewarded with their freedom after the General Assembly authorized their purchase and manumission. However, public references to Gabriel were few until Nat Turners Revolt in 1831 prompted an essay titled Gabriels Defeat, which was published first in the Albany Evening Journaland then in some other northern newspapers, including the Boston Liberator, which printed the piece on September 17, 1831. Guards are sent to the state arsenal at Point of Fork and patrols are ordered out across the state. Theirs was the first attempt to settle at the Falls of the James. Most of its few houses lined Main Street, with warehouses and workshops along the waterfront where the James River is very shallow.
